Madlen's ESC experience in Portugal

A deeper exploration of my experience

My volunteer experience is a deep journey towards understanding, recognition and mutual appreciation. They are moments of emotional navigation, where my patients have taught me much and have been dynamically transported from their world to mine. Their coping with life's adversities and their willingness to stand on their own two feet with strength made me think more deeply.

Sometimes, we, as a common human community, take everything for granted and often grumble about the most trivial things. We are so lucky and privileged and we don't always appreciate it. People with disabilities are true heroes. With their smile, with their warm embrace, with how they look at you or treat you, they teach us lessons of inclusiveness and friendship. At their side, I felt we were a group, different but equal. This experience transformed me and made me a better person.

To be part of such experiences was an honor and a privilege for me. And those who worked with me were a source of inspiration and support. Our collaboration was crucial, and this level of understanding further encouraged me to help.

I invite all those working in the health sector of various specialties, social workers and special education to participate in similar projects. Their contribution is invaluable to the humanitarian effort that is needed.

Madlen spent 6 full months in Portugal offering her volunteer service through European Solidarity Corps to the organization "APS ( APSCDFA Associação Promoção Sócio Cultural Desportivo De Fornos De Algodres)" to support vulnerable social groups.
