
Open House Thessaloniki aspires to make architecture accessible to all by exposing the architectural treasures of this dynamic city. The third Open House event will take place on 20th-22th November.
Since its founding in 316 B.C.,
Thessaloniki has been a crossroad between East and West, the Balkans and the Aegean.
It is the reflection of the several Empire who conquered the city for centuries, from the Roman to the Ottoman, including the Byzantine.
Thessaloniki is an amalgam of old, neoclassical
and modern architectural features that attracts many visitors.
Modernism architecture in Thessaloniki
The birth of Modern Thessaloniki begins with a complete reconstruction of the center after the Great fire of 1917 who played a critical role in the formation of the city to its current state. Before that the Ottomans had attempted to modernize the city but this remained unfinished. Following the liberation of the city, planned for the overall renew all of the center was implemented during the period of intense effort to modernize the new greek state. This plan was based on design by Ernest Hébrard, a french architect.
Thessaloniki became a modern European city with thriving industry, many cultural events and a population of over a million. It is a mixture of brilliant contemporary buildings of the 21st century and Paleochristian/ Byzantine monuments built in the middle Ages. The city offers a variety of architectural landmarks, styles and trends combined; between the old monuments:
-The Upper Town (Ano Poli) which is the oldest and most picturesque settlement, surrounded by huge walls, distinguished for the paved paths and the old houses.
-The Arch of Galerius, a triumphal arch that was constructed by the Romans to celebrate the final victory over the Persians.
-Hagia Sophia, one of the oldest churches of the city.
and the new public buildings, entertainment venues and stores:
-The Aristotelous Square, the main city square of Thessaloniki, Hebrard used elements from Byzantine and Western architecture with a few building facades.
-The Archaelogical Museum is possibly the most mature work by the architect Karantinos, the exhibitions areas and independent gallery of the facade correspond to the historical Mediterranean prototype creating a serene, harmonious example of public architecture.
-The Hellenic Telecommunications Organization Tower succeed in creating a point of reference with the contemporary city. It's first high-tech form.

During these two days, you will have an enjoyable approach to the architectural point of view of Thessaloniki. This event will introduce all of us to the several famous buildings and innovating houses who built this town full of histories and treasures.
