Digital Traces in Berlin

My name is Sevi, and I had the opportunity to participate as a leader in the youth exchange program “Digital Traces: A Journey of Jewish Heritage” in Berlin. As this was my very first youth exchange experience, I can confidently say it set a very positive foundation for the many experiences I hope will follow.

The journey began on a strong note thanks to the USB team, and especially Andreas, who provided us with thorough guidance and preparation before the trip. His support ensured that we felt confident, informed and ready for what was ahead.

Once in Berlin, the facilitators were welcoming, kind and attentive to our needs. They took great care in organizing essential aspects such as food, accommodation and transportation, even providing us with a budget that allowed us to explore the city comfortably. The program included a variety of outdoor activities, guided tours and visits to nearby cities, which made the overall experience dynamic and enjoyable.

That said, the structure of the program was quite flexible - sometimes to the point where it felt inconsistent. Plans occasionally changed, and at times there was a lack of sufficient workshops or interactive sessions, which could have enhanced engagement and deeper participation among the group.

The participants themselves were a highlight of the experience. Everyone was friendly, respectful, and cooperative, which created a positive group dynamic. Although punctuality was sometimes an issue, it did not significantly affect the overall atmosphere. By the end of the exchange, we had built meaningful connections and grew closer as a group.

Regarding the theme of the exchange, it addressed a complex and sensitive subject, especially in the context of current global events. Nevertheless, the program managed to maintain a thoughtful balance. We learned extensively about Berlin’s and Germany’s Jewish history and heritage, and we also explored this topic on a deeper level through powerful experiences such as visiting the Ravensbrück concentration camp. This visit, in particular, left a strong emotional impact.

Reflecting on this experience, it is clear how important it is to remember the past in order to avoid repeating it. Learning about the atrocities committed with such indifference and hatred raises important questions about human nature and the dangers of manipulation and indoctrination. It was both a challenging and eye-opening experience that encouraged critical thinking and personal reflection.

Overall, this youth exchange was a meaningful and memorable experience. It not only expanded my knowledge but also helped me grow personally, develop new connections and gain a deeper understanding of history and its relevance today.

During my participation in the "Digital Traces" program, I had the opportunity to visit important historical sites related to the Second World War in Berlin.

Coming from a background where I have extensively explored the multicultural landscape of Thessaloniki and the impact of the Second World War, this experience allowed me to further expand my perspective.

What struck me the most was how this history continues to resonate in the city of Berlin today — through its topography, its urban landscape, and its collective memory.

Walking through the contemporary city while being aware of these layers of history was a truly meaningful experience.

I sincerely thank you for this wonderful opportunity!
